THE DISTRICT

Welcome to the school district of choice, fellow asset builders! West Carrollton Schools is proud to have you in our school district community and pleased to work in partnership with you to create positive, successful youths.

WCSD has become a leader in the regional effort to promote the 40 Developmental Assets. The assets, developed by The Search Institute, are the positive building blocks all young people need to grow up to be healthy, principled and caring adults. The more assets young people have, the more likely they are to engage in positive behaviors and the less likely they are to engage in risk-taking behaviors.

The asset framework gives us a new vocabulary for both students and adults. Building relationships is the key - and you can start right now. Everyone can be an asset builder! To learn more about the assets, we encourage you to visit our website, www.westcarrolltonschools.com or the web site for the Greater Dayton Conference on Youth at www.daytonyouthconference.com . The 2006 conference was a huge success thanks to our many partners, including the South Metro Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The 40 Developmental Assets are a perfect fit for West Carrollton Schools. Our district has a long and rich history of working with partners to promote the same qualities the assets address. The assets easily align with our Core Values: improvement, learning, leadership, value and results.

We have also successfully collaborated with many other segments of the community. Among the notable accomplishments are the Quality Schools Quality Community Committee and the 21 st Century Skills These seven behaviors were identified by our business community as key to success in the work place. They are also embedded in the 40 Developmental Assets.

With each year, West Carrollton just gets better and better. With the 2006-2007 school year, we have once again accelerated the rate of alignment and change while continuing our relentless drive for quality and customer (students, stakeholder and market) satisfaction. Our focus is clear, our framework is strong and our future is bright. Thank you for choosing West Carrollton Schools!

Ohio’s Third Frontier Project Benefits Dayton Region

Ohio’s Third Frontier Project is Governor Bob Taft’s $1.1 billion economic development plan – the largest-ever of-its-kind – to create new jobs through the expansion of Ohio’s high-tech research capabilities and promotion of new start-up companies. This initiative was announced in February 2002 during Taft’s State of the State address, and to date, the State has awarded more than $214 million in Third Frontier funds throughout the State.

The Third Frontier Project was designed after the Ohio Department of Development commissioned Battelle Memorial Institute to complete an Ohio Technology-based Economic Development Study in 2002. This study ultimately concluded that if Ohio is to remain globally competitive, the state must use its manufacturing heritage as a catalyst to become the cutting-edge location for new products and processes through the application of research.

There are several components that fall under the umbrella of the Third Frontier Project: Third Frontier Action Funds, Biomedical Research & Technology Transfer Trust Funds, Fuel Cell Initiative Awards, Wright Centers of Innovation (both bioscience related and non-bioscience related), Wright Capital Project Funds, Third Frontier Internship Funds and the Innovation Ohio Loan program.

The Dayton area alone has received more than $21 million in Third Frontier Funding to benefit the region. For example the National Composite Center, in Kettering, received $2 million in funding to advance the manufacturing process of large scale polymer parts used in the aerospace, defense, marine and transportation markets. This project is expected to create more than 100 jobs.

The Third Frontier Project is also benefiting academic institutions in the region. Wright State University received an $11 million award to establish the Wright Center of Innovation for Advanced Data Management. This project is expected to create 500 jobs. And, the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce Education and Public Improvement Foundation received nearly $247,000 to create 77 internships and 10 externships for Dayton-area college and vocational students.

Ohio’s Third Frontier Project is not only concerned with retaining Ohio’s college graduates and keeping Ohio’s children close to home. It’s also focused on treating debilitating diseases such as cancer and commercializing new products that have been developed right here in Ohio. It is about creating new jobs for Ohioans and ensuring that all Ohioans have a secure and bright future.

For more information about Ohio’s Third Frontier Project, please contact the Ohio Department of Development at 1-800-848-1300 or 614-466-3887. You may also visit http://www.thirdfrontier.com online.
