The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is the area’s largest no-kill animal shelter. The animal welfare organization started back in 1902 and has been helping people and pets in the Miami Valley since then. (That’s before the Wright Brothers were flying airplanes, before New Mexico was a state, and before women had the right to vote!)
The 501(c)(3) nonprofit helps all pets including dogs, cats, rabbits, reptiles, birds, hamsters and even horses, pigs and chickens! The Humane Society of Greater Dayton adopts out around 2,000 animals each year and also helps reunite lost pets with their owners.
The charity is completely independent and is not affiliated with any other nonprofit on a regional or national level. They also do not receive any government funding. The animal shelter is extremely fiscally responsible and is a 4-star rated charity on ChartiyNavigator.org, which is an independent organization that oversees the spending of nonprofits across the nation. A 4-star rating is the highest rating that an organization can receive, and the Humane Society of Greater Dayton has kept that rating for eight consecutive years, which is something only 4% of nonprofits in the United States can claim!
The animal shelter not only helps find forever homes for homeless pets, but they also help keep animals safe in the community. The nonprofit is the only animal welfare organization in the Miami Valley with licensed Humane Agents working seven days per week. These Humane Agents get tips from the community, go out and investigate individuals’ properties, seize pets if they are not being cared for properly, and press charges against the owner. The animals seized are rehabilitated at the shelter.
The Humane Society of Greater Dayton also provides resources to the community for peoples’ owned pets. They provide low-cost veterinary services including spaying/neutering, dental cleanings, microchipping and more! These low-cost services help people keep their pets in their home and makes sure they are healthy!
